Swearengin Urges Public Vote on Independent Police Auditor Mayoral candidate Ashley Swearengin today voiced her support for establishing an Independent Police Auditor (IPA) for the City of Fresno. She called on the Fresno City Council to approve a resolution on Wednesday’s agenda to submit the issue to Fresno voters. “The time has come to give the public a say on this issue,” Swearengin said.
Fresno is the largest city in California without independent police oversight. Mayor Alan Autry has repeatedly proposed to create an IPA, but the City Council has been unwilling to approve the proposals. The resolution before the City Council would place the issue on the November 4, 2008 ballot.
“I urge the Council to do the right thing and send this question to the voters,” Swearengin said. “Public safety is something we must all work on together, and that’s why we need to let the voice of our community be heard on this issue.”
Swearengin is a firm public safety advocate and has made the battle against gangs and crime a major platform in her campaign for Mayor. “The Fresno Police Department is a highly professional organization,” Swearengin said. “An IPA will provide transparency and ensure the public’s voice is always heard on the critical matter of public safety in our city.”
Swearengin will be available for comment before or following the City Council vote.
