The problems facing Fresno are many, and it will take a disciplined leader to fix the bureaucratic glitches that are at the heart of many of the city's failures. But the race for mayor isn't just about smoothing out the permitting process at City Hall or making sure the potholes get filled. That's part of the job, of course, but we also need a mayor who has a vision for what Fresno can become after we work through the economic downturn and turn to the needs of a 21st century city.
We believe Ashley Swearengin is best equipped to take on Fresno's challenges. We supported Swearengin in the 11-candidate primary in June, and the way she has conducted herself in the runoff campaign continues to give us confidence that she's the right person for the job.
Opponent Henry T. Perea is very capable, and Fresno voters are choosing among two quality candidates. But we believe that Swearengin can handle the day-to-day activities that demand much of the mayor's time, as well as set Fresno on an exciting long-term course that will take advantage of the community's gifts and deal with its many challenges.
In Fresno's modified strong-mayor form of government, the chief executive must be able to work with the council and run the city government through the city manager. The past two mayors have not always had good relations with the City Council and that has torpedoed many of their initiatives.
Swearengin knows how to work with people, especially those of the political variety whose egos often must be soothed while keeping tasks on track. She has done that as co-founder and director of the Regional Jobs Initiative and in her work leading the California Partnership for the San Joaquin Valley.
She's committed to improving the economy, creating jobs and making Fresno safe. She understands that many of our problems must be attacked on a regional basis. Bad air, a shortage of water and an inadequate transportation system aren't issues that stop at a city or county border.
While she has excellent collaborative skills, she also has a political toughness that is needed at City Hall. She's made a commitment to voters to make changes in departments that are underperforming, while leaving competent managers in place.
We believe Ashley Swearengin has the skills and temperament to lead California's sixth-largest city.
